About Wari

Wanawake Wa Wari was originally founded in 1968 by a group of Black women who felt the need for an atmosphere that promoted self-awareness and personal confidence. Since that time Wari has served as a place where women of African descent have prepared for the world academically, culturally, and socially. It has also provided an atmosphere where women feel comfortable dealing with the issues that relate to their lives and history in the Ithaca community and beyond. We are striving to continue this tradition.

Wari is a three-story cooperative that accommodates ten undergraduate Black women.  All the members share a sisterhood and participate in the weekly house responsibilities as well as involvement in cultural and social activities. This is an essential aspect of the cooperative living experience. Wari is both a housing cooperative and an organization, which comes with responsibilities such as community service, dinners with faculty, fundraising, and attending Unity Hours. All of the members of Wari House participate in, or, initiate similar cultural and service endeavors during their time in the house. Wari women pride themselves on offering a safe space for community members to engage, share meals, and learn with one another.

About Wari Anchor

"Wari is not only my home away from home; it's home in a way I've never experienced before. Here I'm able to truly be me, have intellectual conversations, teach and learn from my sisters, argue, bicker and at the end of the day know that I am growing to be the best woman I can be!"

Shanique Alabi, Wari Vice President 2014
